An awareness camp was organized on "Silage making for sustainable livestock production" at village Bhuchar, Block Gandiwind, Distt. Tarn Taran. Ten livestock farmers participated in this awareness camp. Dr. Balwinder Kumar, Associate Director, KVK, Tarn Taran apprised farmers about best practices for good quality silage making for feeding to the livestock. He said that about 70% of expenditure is incurred on feed and fodder for running the dairy farm. By providing good quality corn silage, the expenditure on feed can be curtailed and it also helps in saving of labour. Sh. Jasbir Singh a progressive farmer of village Bhuchar having 100 livestock heads said that with the help of KVK Tarn Taran, he is preparing about 500 tonnes of maize silage and running his farm successfully. About 30 farmers are making silage in this and surrounding villages, and farmers are taking help from KVK, said Dr. Balwinder Kumar. Dr. Suresh Kumar, Assistant Professor (LP) discussed about the management of livestock in summer season and clean milk production at dairy farms. KVK team also visited 10 dairy farms in this area where farmers were urged to contact Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Booh for procuring mineral mixture, uromin lick, bypass-fat and other inputs at reasonable rates.
