Krishi Vigyan Kendra Tarn Taran organised awareness programmes on direct seeded rice (DSR) in village Dargapur of Naushehra Pannuan block of Tarn Taran. Where in progressive farmers of the village interacted with the experts. Dr Balwinder Kumar, Associate Director at KVK, Tarn Taran welcomed participants and stressed to adopt the direct seeded rice for sustainable farming. He told that due to labour shortage for paddy transplanting owing to COVID-19 situation and over exploitation of underground water resource, there is urgent need to follow practice of DSR to overcome these problems. Dr Kumar discussed in detailed about the production technology and management of direct seeded rice. The DSR technology not only saves labour, but also requires less water, ensures early crop maturity has low production cost and creates better soil physical conditions as well for succeeding crops. Dr Anil Kumar, Assistant Professor (Soil Science) elaborated about the nutrient, weed and water management in DSR. He said that the herbicide should be sprayed at ideal stage or at 2-3 leaf stage rather than allow weeds to develop and spray on later stages. The herbicides become ineffective once the weeds get established, so the right stage of spray is very much important. He especially focused on iron deficiency management in direct seeded rice. The experts of KVK are carrying out campaign on direct seeded rice in different villages and have visited Booh Havelian, Harike, Kirtowal, Nandpur, Dargapur Jauneke, Dadehar Sahib, Bhagupur Havelian, etc. to motivate farmers for DSR.
