Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Booh, Tarn Taran organised a one-week Vocational Training Programme on “Scientific Bee Keeping” under Mini Mision-1 sponsored by National Bee Keeping and Honey Mission (NBHM) and National Bee Board (NBB). A total number of 25 farmers and farm women from different villages of the district Tarn Taran enrolled in this training programme. Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor, GADVASU addressed the farmers regarding importance of beekeeping as part of the Integrated Farming System in the state. Dr. Singh discussed about the medicinal value of honey. An exposure visit of the trainees was organized at Apiary Unit, Department of Entomology, PAU, Ludhiana wherein trainees learned latest aspects about honey bee rearing. Dr. Parkash Singh Brar, Director Extension Education, GADVASU also interacted with bee farmers and discussed about the marketing channels and value addition in the honey. He also explained the economics of bee farming and urged upon the formulation FPOs, Self-help groups regarding beekeeping. Dr. Balwinder Kumar, Associate Director (Training), KVK, Booh, Tarn Taran emphasized on setting up of beekeeping as subsidiary business apart from the rearing of livestock. Dr. Suresh Kumar, Assistant professor, Livestock Production and course coordinator delivered different sermons on relationship between bees and pollination, understanding the honey bee colony and the working of queen, workers and drone bees. Dr Gurmeet Singh, DES, FASC, Amritsar discussed in detail regarding management of honey bee colony during different seasons, handling of queens, workers and drone. He also explained about different problems in bees and their preventive strategies. Dr. Balwinder Kumar presented his sincere thanks to Vice Chancellor and all the participants for sparing their valuable time to make this training a great success.
