Krishi Vigyan Kendra, GADVASU, Booh, Tarn Taran organized a five day ‘On-Campus’ Vocational Training Programme on ‘Scientific Poultry Farming’. Thirty farmers, rural youths and farm women belonging to SC community of different villages participated in the training course under RKVY. In this training program scientific knowledge on various aspects of poultry farming was imparted for skill development of farmers for their economic upliftment.
Dr. Balwinder Kumar, Deputy Director (Training), Krishi Vigyan Kendra, interacted with the trainees and enlightened them about the importance of poultry sector in Punjab. He encouraged the participants for adopting poultry farming as allied business on the scientific lines. He said that for improving the socio-economic status of the traditional and poor farmers, backyard poultry farming is a handy enterprise with low cost initial investment, but high economic return along with guarantee for improving protein deficiency among the poor. He highlighted various facilities developed by GADVASU and KVK and further stressed upon farmers by how poultry industry can conserve water by installing additional water meters, more extensive monitoring of wastewater flows in poultry farms and efficient ways that poultry processors can use water in the preparation of wholesome and safe poultry products. Dr. Gurdeep Singh, Assistant Professor (Livestock Production) told the farmers about the different poultry breeds, their housing management at small level, construction of poultry shed and requirement of water, feed requirement and marketing of egg and poultry birds. An exposure visit was organised at the Chopra Poultry Farm, Zira where practical knowledge was given. Dr. Shashi Pal (Assistant Professor, Livestock Production) and Dr. Anil Kumar( Assistant Professor, Soil Science) also delivered their lectures like preparation from poultry manure, loan facilities, vermicompost preparation and discussed different aspects related to poultry farming.
Participants appreciated the efforts of KVK for providing them training related to poultry farming. The vocational training programme concluded with a post-knowledge test to check the knowledge level of trainees about poultry farming.
