Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Booh, Tarn Taran, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University organised 5 days Vocational Training Programme on “Freshwater Carp Culture : Innovative Approach” w.e.f. 12-01-2017 to 18-01-2017 under ICAR-47 Scheme.The financial assistance for vocational training programme was sponsored by National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), Hyderabad.The aim of this training programme was to ensure better livelihood among farmers/people through adoption of self employment in fish farming practices, enhancement in socio-economic status of the farmers, as well as healthy surroundings and protection of the environment. A total of 20 farmers and unemployed youth belonging to different villages viz; Bangla Rai, Patti, Sito Meh Jhuggian, Nizam Dinwala, Booh Havelian, Jhamke Khurd, Mari Kamboke, Theh Chahal, Kachcha Pacca, Dhunda and Sarhali Kalan of district Tarn Taran participated in this 5 days Vocational Training Programme.

Director expressed his views about carp fish farming and stressed upon its adoption as subsidiary occupation for earning more profit. Dr Syed Shabih Hassan, Course Coordinator discussed with trainees about innovative approaches in the culture of important endemic and cultivable medium and minor carp species. Indigenous major carp varieties such as rohu, catla, mrigal, kalbasu and exogenous carp breeds like silver carp, grass carp, and common carp are preferably cultured by rural/urban farmers/fishers and also in village ponds on commercial scale. He also added that Punjab has the highest fish productivity per unit area in the country producing fish nearly 6.5 tonnes/hectare, which is double the national average. Fish farmers should avail the facilities being extended by the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) and Government of Punjab for purchasing of items/materials on increased subsidized rate for setting up new fish farms and renovation of old or panchayati ponds.
Trainees were trained about lay out and construction of fish pond, practical demonstration of carp species, pond fertilisation, techniques for natural fish feed production, breeding and rearing of carp species, quality carp seed production, stocking and post stocking management, setting up of carp hatchery, integrated fish farming with agriculture/horticulture/vegetables/ honeybee/livestock/piggery/goat/poultry/duckeryfarming system for efficient recycling of waste.
In this training programme lectures were also delivered on carp fish processing and value addition, fish diseases and their control, marketing and economics, role of university and government for upliftment of fishers. An exposure visit was also arranged at carp fish farming unit of Mr Balwant Singh in village Mari Kamboke, District-Tarn Taran. Farmers were practically trained regarding different tenets of carp fish farming.
