The discipline of Veterinary Medicine came into being in 1975 with Dr S. K. Misra, an eminent Veterinarian, as first Head of the Department. It has become one of the busiest Veterinary Medicine departments in the country attracting more than 20,000 cases of large and small animals annually. The department provides specialized diagnostic services including Endoscopy, Dialysis, Ultrasonography, Echocardiography, Ophthalmoscopy and Otoscopy. In addition to providing Blood Bank facilities for small animals, the Udder and Hoof care units of the department offers specialized services for farm animals.
The department is actively engaged in the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research and extension activities. It possesses well equipped laboratories, conference rooms with multimedia and facilities for research on mastitis, fore-stomach, respiratory and various internal as well as preventive diseases of farm animals. The department is currently taking up research issues pertaining to internal diseases of dairy animals viz. Bovine Leukemia Virus, nervous disorders, calf diseases, mastitis and metabolic as well as production diseases.
Mandates of the department
The discipline of Veterinary Medicine involves the art and science of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease for all species of farm, companion, exotic and wild animals. It encompasses up-to-date undergraduate and post-graduate teaching on veterinary diagnostics, therapeutics and healthcare facilities. The department caters health and critical care services to livestock as well as pet animals, in addition to applied and translational research. Extension education to farmers and other stakeholders on animal health is one of the strong components of mandate.
