The Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics came into existence on the bifurcation of the Department of Animal Science in 1998 under Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. Later on,as per new VCI guidelines the department was renamed as Department of Animal Genetics and Breeding. The department has mandates on Teaching, Research and Extension in the area of Animal Genetics & Breeding. Department is constantly engaged in developing Human resource in the field of Animal Breeding, Animal Genetics, Biostatistics and Computer Applications both at the Undergraduate and Post-graduate levels. The Department is actively involved in conducting research in Quantitative Genetics, Population Genetics, Cytogenetics, Molecular Genetics and Genomics. The department is also providing consultancy services to the farmers in collaboration with Livestock Farms and through involvement in various extension related activities viz. Agricultural fares, Livestock fares, workshops, trainings, camps etc. organized at University and State level time to time. The faculty of the department are actively involved in various research projects dedicated to the genetic improvement of dairy cattle, buffaloes, goats and poultry.
