The Department of Surgery & Radiology was recognized as the Centre of Advanced Studies (and later renamed as Centre of Advanced Faculty Training) of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in 1995. The department has three main areas of work viz. Surgery, Anaesthesia and Radiology. The department has well established small and large animal anaesthesia, small and large animal radiology unit including Computed and Digital Radiography (CR and DR) systems and ultrasonography unit including Doppler, 3D/4D, elastography and echocardiography facilities for large and small animals. The department has established excellent species-specific surgical facilities. Recently the department has developed minimally invasive diagnostic and surgical facilities such as C-ARM fluoroscopy, endoscopy, laparoscopy and arthroscopy for large and small animals. The department also has well established ophthalmic, dentistry and equine surgery units. Ultrasonography of canine abdomen and ultrasonography of bovine fore-stomach including ultarsonographic diagnosis of diaphragmatic hernia and omasal impaction in bovines were first reported kind from this department. Most of the faculty members of this department have acquired training from abroad and have won many prestigious national and international awards and fellowships in respective areas of research. Under the Centre of Advanced Faculty Training program, the department has conducted 32 training and trained more than 479 scientists/teachers working in SVU's, SAU's / ICAR institutes. Department has successfully hosted the national congress of Indian Society for Veterinary Surgery at Ludhiana on the topic of 'Advances in Veterinary Surgery in pets and farm animals" from 18-20 Feb 1991 and international congress on the topic of 'Current trends in diagnostic imaging and management of surgical affections in dairy animals' from 11-13 Nov 2009. The department has completed several extramural projects funded by ICAR, UGC, DST, FIST and RKVY. In 2014, the department was awarded an ICAR Sponsored All India Network Program on "Diagnostic Imaging and management of Surgical Conditions in Animals" which is running successfully. Besides, at present, the department is handling 3 more extramural projects funded DBT and SERB-DST agencies.
