College of Dairy Science and Technology, (CODST) Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana celebrated world milk day on 1st June with the theme “Sustainability in Dairy Sector- Environment, Nutrition and Socio-Economics”. Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice Chancellor, GADVASU was chief guest of this celebration function whereas Dr. H S Banga, Registrar was guest of honor. Dr. Inderjeet Singh applauded the initiative taken by the college for creating the awareness among the consumers about the quality and nutritive value of the milk. He highlighted the importance of world milk day and relevance of milk in our daily life. He informed that Punjab state is having highest per capita milk availability of 1181 g/day among all the Indian states and praised the role played by cooperative sector in helping the dairy farmers during covid period. Further, he expressed his concern over the lower consumption levels of milk products as compared to liquid milk in comparison to developed countries.

Dr. Ramneek, Dean, CODST told that in the context of world milk day, various events were arranged in the last week viz. competitions on e-poster, essay writing and e-quiz competition. The purpose of these competitions was to create a sense of awareness and competitiveness among the students. Prizes were also announced for the winners of various competitions. Manu Shukla, Shreya Talan and Anuragdeep Kaur bagged first prize in essay, quiz and poster competitions respectively. A free ‘milk adulteration testing camp’ was also organized where about 100 milk samples of the consumers were tested. A majority (83 %) of the milk samples were brought by the consumers who purchase milk from milk vendors/ milk producers. Out of 100 samples, only 14 samples were found to be adulterated.

On this occasion, 10 video films developed by faculty on different topics of milk and a new dairy product, 'Blueberry Yoghurt' having low fat and high protein was also launched by the vice-chancellor. To make the world milk day memorable, a special edition of 'Vigiyanak Pashu Palan' magazine of the university dedicated to dairy was also published by Directorate of Extension Education. All Deans, Directors, faculty and students attended the event in online/offline mode.
