Institutional Development Plan (IDP) Cell, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhianaorganized a guest lecture on 'Dairying in India- opportunities and Challenges'. Dr Rameshwar Singh, Vice Chancellor, Bihar Animal Sciences University (BASU) was the expert speaker. A distinguished Dairy Scientist, Dr Singh is the founder Vice Chancellor of BASU, Patna. He had served at different key administrative positions at eminent institutes like Indian Veterinary Research Institute and National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) . During his tenure at NDRI, he established the National collection of dairy cultures which is only facility of dairy organisms in India.
Dr SPS Ghuman, Dean, College of Veterinary Sciences and Principal Investigator, IDP welcomed Dr Singh and stressed on the importance of the topic of his talk. He asserted that dairying is backbone of the Indian economy as it is supporting 80 million households in India. In his talk, Dr Singh threw the light on dairy sector in India in a very elaborative manner and also explained challenges being faced by farmers and entrepreneurs. He insisted that dairy industry should work on development of shelf stable milk products which is having a potential market. Breeding, animal health and nutrition is another area where researchers and policy makers should work in tandem for the growth of this industry. Dr Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor GADVASU expressed his happiness that IDP cell, NAHEP took an initiative in organizing lectures from key experts on pertinent issues that are relevant to animal industry. He added that the focus should be devising technologies and framing policies which are inclusive. The event concluded with vote of thanks by Dr Ramneek, Dean College of Dairy Science and Technology.
