Need to conserve Nili Ravi Buffalo – Dr. Inderjeet Singh, VC Vet Varsity

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Booh of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, (GADVASU) organized a workshop on Nili Ravi buffalo at its campus. Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice Chancellor, GADVASU graced the occasion as Chief Guest. About 200 farmers from different villages participated in the programme. Deputy Directors and Veterinary Officers, Department of Animal Husbandry, Govt. of Punjab from districts such as Tarn Taran, Ferozepur,  Amritsar along with Veterinary Officers participated in the programme. Dr. K.L. Mehrara (Retd) CTO and Dr. F.C. Tuteja, Senior Scientist and Officer Sub campus, CIRB, Nabha also participated in the event. Dr. Inderjeet Singh said that Nili Ravi buffalo is native to Punjab and plays a significant role in fulfilling the requirement of milk and dairy products in the region. There is urgent need to conserve such buffaloes. Nili Ravi buffalo rearing can help farmers to earn handsome money. Dr. Singh expressed concern about decline in the Nili Ravi buffalo population and production of more non-descript animals which are not having true to breed characteristic.

Vice Chancellor inaugurated the Animal Science Laboratory at KVK, in which semen of buffalo bull of Nili Ravi will be available to the farmers. He said that Nili Ravi Buffalo Bull semen bank will be the state of the art facility to the dairy farmers and this will improve the overall production and productivity potential of Nili Ravi buffaloes. Dr. Balwinder Kumar, Associate Director, KVK said that in this workshop livestock farmers gathered latest information about Nili Ravi buffaloes which certainly will improve the breed, feeding and production potential of animal. KVK will also provide other livestock related facilities such as milk analyses, feed and fodder evaluation and dung analysis for detection of disease in the livestock.

Dr. R.S. Grewal, Director, Livestock Farms, GADVASU. Dr. Tejbir Singh Randhawa,  Chairman Sukhraj Singh Kirtowal, SGPC member Sh. Sukhwinder Sidhu and sarpanches of various villages were present in the event. Farmers also brought Nili Ravi buffalo and bull for display in the workshop and best buffalo and bull was awarded in the event. In the event, teaching and non-teaching staff of KVK were also present. Private companies, Self-Help Groups and scientists from PAU, GADVASU and state departments exhibit their technology and products.  An informative pamphlet on Nili Ravi buffalo was also released on this occasion.
