27 November 2017 - World Fisheries Day celebrated by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Handiaya (Barnala)

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Barnala, has celebrated “World Fisheries Day” on 21st November, 2017 at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Handiaya, Barnala in guidance of Dr. Prahalad Singh Tanwar, Associate Director (Training), KVK, Barnala. A total 31 rural youth, farmers and farm women from different villages of Barnala district were participated in the programme.

Dr. P.S. Tanwar, Associate Director, KVK Barnala chaired the occasion and said that fish farming is source of self employment. He highlighted the activities carried out by KVK for welfare of farmers of district Barnala.

Sh. Khushvir Singh, Assistant Professor (Fisheries) highlighted in details about the history and importance of World Fisheries Day as it is celebrated all over the years since 1998. He explained about the different types of cultivable fishes, scientific rearing and management of fish pond as well as integration with agriculture and livestock farming systems for efficient recycling of waste and motivated farmers to adopt fish farming to raise their income and economic standard. He also emphasized the importance of ornamental fish culture for self employment.

Dr. Surender Singh, Assistant Professor (Livestock production) deliberated on the integrated fish cum livestock farming and made aware of various livestock management practices to the farmers. Video film on fish farming was also shown to the participants.

An off campus programme on “World Fisheries Day” was also organized at village Sekha (Barnala) where the construction of new fish pond was started by the farmer Gurmel Singh in 2.5 acre area under the guidance of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Barnala. Rakesh Kumar, Asst.Dir.Fisheries, Sangrur and Harwinder Singh, Senior Fishery Officer, Barnala were also present.
