12 September 2017 - Vet Varsity remembers martyrs of Saragarhi Battle

To commemorate the 120th anniversary of Battle of Saragarhi a seminar was organized at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana. Er. Karamjit Singh Aujla, noted writer and S. Charanjit Singh, scholar of Sikh history addressed the august gathering. They delivered very impressive and important information on the Battle of Saragarhi. They informed that the battle was fought before the Tirah campaign on September 12, 1897, between Sikh soldiers of the British Indian Army and Pashtun Orakzai tribesmen in the North-West Frontier province, now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan. In this battle the Briitish Indian contingent comprised 21 Sikhs of the 36th Sikhs (now the 4th Battalion of the Sikh regiment), who were stationed at an Army post attacked by around 10, 000 Afghans. The Sikhs, led by Havildar, Ishar Singh, chose to fight to the death, in what is considered by some military historian as one of the history's greatest battle. The post was recaptured two days later by another British Indian contingent. In this Battle the only 21 fighters gave a tough fight to 10,000 soldiers and killed hundreds of them. Dr. Amarjit Singh Nanda, Vice-Chancellor of Varsity said that it is very important to inform new generations the valor of the Heroes of our history. He said that battle of Saragarhi is an inspiration and a light house for our armed force.

Er. Aujla informed that the entire unit of Saragrahi battle was bestowed with gallantry award-Indian Order of Merit. Generally individuals  are given gallantry awards but its was rare that the entire unit bestowed with gallantry award.

Dr. Simrat Sagar Singh, Dean Post Graduate Studies, Dr. H.K. Verma, Director Extension Education, Dr. S. Rampal, Director Student's Welfare and Dr. N.S. Sharma, Controller of Examination honored Er. Karamjit Singh Aujla and Charanjit Singh. They presented a set of university publication to both of them. Dr. Simrat Sagar Singh presented vote of thanks for the august gathering.
